When Michael Felger asked me on Tuesday's Felger & Mazz how I would feel about Alex Smith as the Patriots' starting quarterback in 2021 — moreover that Felger would be fine with it — I lost it. It wasn't an act.
No, it didn't have anything to do with Smith, who is a fine man, and his comeback from that devastating injury has been nothing short of miraculous. I don't think I've ever interviewed him, or even had cause to. He's NFL background music. Doesn't lose too much. Doesn't win too much. He's actually a decent enough quarterback, but in the football dictionary, his picture is right next to the title Game Manager.
And, no, it didn't have anything to do with Felger, even though he has more bad QB takes than Belichick has victories.
My reaction had to do with Belichick, plans, a rebuild and the QB position.
Basically, if the Patriots are starting Smith or any another aging journeyman quarterback from outside the organization next season — even as just a caretaker for, say, a drafted quarterback — then this season was a complete waste and further illustrates that Belichick
