Red Sox

FINAL: MLB Faux-pening Day, Blue Jays 9, Red Sox 8 – Toronto’s 8-run 4th inning dooms E-Rod, Sox

Rafael Devers: Monster game with two homers and 5 RBI, and kept the Sox' hopes alive in the ninth.

Michael Chavis: Was 4 for 4 in his season debut at first base and was just pelting the ball all over the place.

Josh Taylor: Provided 2.1 innings of stellar relief to keep the Red Sox in it.

Eduardo Rodriguez: Staked with a 4-0 lead and nearly perfect through three innings, he should have cruised. But his control got away from him and he couldn't get out of the fourth inning. If he wants to be the new ace, he has to do a lot better than that.

Ron Roenicke: Should have realized the wheels were coming off with Rodriguez and allowed him to leave with the lead. Big mistake and he's going to get hammered for it.

Kevin Pillar: That's a big 0 for 5 bagel in the middle of the lineup, and JD Martinez didn't fare much better (1 for 4) in the cleanup spot.

Well, it's a little bit of a bummer that Opening Day has been postponed — it's always been one of my favorite days on the sporting calendar since I was a little kid.

Going to try something a little different today, so bear with me...

Thanks to our friends at Out Of The Park Baseball 2021, we're going to attempt to simulate what might have happened up at Rogers Centre if the Red Sox and Blue Jays kicked off the season this afternoon.

So we're going to live blog the game just like it was any other game, and we'll include some pics and gifs when we can.

So here are the starting lineups in advance ... see you this afternoon.

Red Sox 9th

Blue Jays 8th

Brewer walked the first batter he faced, but that was it.

We head to the 9th, looking for a miracle.

Red Sox 8th

Boston goes in order again. This is getting depressing.

Blue Jays 7th

Taylor ends the inning by inducing a Gurriel double-play ball.

Red Sox 7th

Another 1-2-3 inning. UGH.

Blue Jays 6th

Jansen lead-off double.
One-out sac fly by Bichette. RUN: BLUE JAYS 9, RED SOX 4.
Triple for Hernandez but he's stranded.

Red Sox 6th

One out singles by Bradley and Chavis have the Red Sox in business.
Peraza fouls out.
Vazquez grounds out.

Biggest missed chance.

Blue Jays 5th

Three up, three down.

Red Sox 5th

Three up, three down.

Blue Jays 4th

Guerrero singles, and Grichuk follows with a 1-0 dinger that went 391 feet. RUNS: RED SOX 4, BLUE JAYS 2.

E-Rod in trouble. Shaw with a double. And then a Gurriel double. RUN: RED SOX 4, BLUE JAYS 3.

Wild pitch ... RUN: RED SOX 4, BLUE JAYS 4.

Come on Ron, do something. E-Rod at 72 pitches.

Of course, he doesn't listen to me, and Jansen hits a 1-2 pitch 405 feet to give the Blue Jays their first lead as the Rogers Centre is going nuts ... Hembree in for Rodriguez.

Inning will not end. Biggo walks, Bichette doubles him in, and then Hernandez follows with a 415-foot home run. RUNS: BLUE JAYS 8, RED SOX 4.

Walden in, whoever that is... inning finally ends. YUCK!

Red Sox 4th

A lead-off single by Chavis (2 for 2) goes for nothing as Peraza grounds into a double play.

Blue Jays 3rd

Rodriguez ran into a little trouble with back-to-back two-out walks, but Hernandez bounced into a fielder's choice, third to second to end it. Rodriguez up to 52 pitches.

Through three...

Red Sox 3rd

Benintendi leads off with a scorching double down the right-field line.
Bogaerts follows with RBI single. RUN: RED SOX 2, BLUE JAYS 0.

Two-run homer to RCF by Devers of Ryu. 1-1 pitch, Exit velocity of 100 mph. 383 feet. RUNS: RED SOX 4, BLUE JAYS 0.

Red Sox second

Singles by Martinez and Bradley around a Pillar flyout give the Red Sox runners on first and second with one out.
Chavis follows with a single up the midde to give the Red Sox the lead. RUN: RED SOX 1, BLUE JAYS 0.
Peraza popped out for the second out, and Vazquez also flies out.

Blue Jays second

Benintendi with a diving catch to rob Grichuk leading off.
E-Rod is cruising. 26 pitches so far.

First inning

Benintendi grounded out 1-3 on the first pitch of the season.
Bogaerts struck out looking.
Devers grounded out 1-3.
