If we follow the expectation that the Celtics have no interest in trading their best five players ahead of the trade deadline, the next best asset the Celtics have at their disposal in the next two weeks is the Memphis Grizzlies top-6 protected first-round pick for 2020.
As recently as a month ago, the prospect of trading this pick was far fetched on the surface. The Grizzlies were in the midst of the pack of West lottery teams and looked just as likely to trend towards the bottom of the standings as they were towards the No. 8 seed. With the possibility that the Memphis 2020 pick could roll over to an unprotected 2021 first-round pick, the upside of the Celtics potentially maintaining that asset for a much-hyped 2021 draft class made moving the pick tough to justify in any hypothetical.
However, things have changed in a hurry when it comes to the trade value of said pick. With eight wins in their last 10 games, the Grizzlies have shot up to the No. 8 seed and separated themselves from the pack of subpar Western Conference teams thanks to the stellar play of Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson. While the Grizzlies are far from a lock to make the postseason, they are currently 5.5 games ahead of the sixth-worst team in the NBA (i.e. the spot where the odds heavily increase above 50/50 that the pick conveys in 2021).
