BSJ Daily Briefing 11.06.19: Gordon Hayward goes off, Bruins drop tough one in Montreal

Good morning!

A few random thoughts while I wonder how much Claude enjoyed that last night...

• The Celtics beat the lowly Cavs last night in an affair that was surprisingly tight, but there were two big developments: Gordon Hayward looked goooood, and Carsen Edwards showed some things.


• Hayward had 39 points ... "it was Hayward’s 17th made field goal of the night, a career-high and his 16th straight make from inside the arc. The swingman went an absurd 16-of-16 from 2-point range on the way to his 39-point night, joining Wilt Chamberlain as the only player to make 16+ 2-pt FGs in a game without missing."


• That huge sigh of relief you heard was from Danny Ainge. People can stop writing stories about the Real Hayward coming back ... he's back.


• Meanwhile in Montreal, the Bruins lost for just the second time in a game you're going to hear a lot of griping about when it comes to the officials.


• You make your own breaks, and when your goaltender gives up three very soft goals, it's really hard to complain. Tuukka Rask has been excellent this season. So he didn't have a great game ... so what?


• Yeah, Butch wasn't happy about it ... "You could argue it was a possession play. My beef with that … the rule was put in place specifically for egregious (calls). They’re over there (reviewing) for three minutes. You think, well, ‘What is the purpose of this rule?’ Either you find something or you don’t. Three minutes. ...So now you’re looking for something for it to be offside. You know it’s going to go the other way, and it did. That’s where my beef comes from. Intent of the rule. You always want to get it right, but there was kind of a change this summer, punishing the coaches if they got it wrong, for this reason. They didn’t want three-minute reviews. Anyway, it was a big part of the game. Didn’t go our way, so that’s the way it goes some nights.”


• Sure, the Patriots defense had an off night, but the offense is still the much bigger worry going forward (I'll fill in the positional ratings later in the day).
