HEADLINES

Revolution season comes to a close with playoff loss to Atlanta United: In the same building that Robert Kraft lifted the Patriots’ sixth Lombardi trophy to close out the 2018 NFL season, Kraft’s soccer team, the Revolution, ended their 2019 season on the short side of a 1-0 decision to defending MLS Cup champion — and current US Open Cup and Campeones Cup holders — Atlanta United FC. The Five Stripes advance to the Conference Semifinals, where they will host either Philadelphia or the Red Bulls on Thursday night.

Escobar’s goal the difference: The Revs had come out of the halftime interval full of verve, and had a couple of forays forward. But in a tight, scoreless match — and in the playoffs — only one goal will do it. That goal came from Atlanta United right back Franco Escobar who, after a Revs giveaway and a Ezequiel Barco pass, buried a rocket into the net to put the defending champions into the ascendency. The Revs had a few bites of the apple in second-half stoppage time, including a Diego Fagundez-to-Juan Fernando Caicedo cross that was just out of reach, as well as headers off corners.

QUOTABLE QUOTES

“I felt like today, we competed really well. It’s a hard game today, obviously. I felt up until minute 60, we were there; I thought we were playing better. We were able to make good forward runs. Maybe that last pass, we couldn’t find it, but I felt we truly played well today.”
— Carles Gil through team interpreter Lucas Santos to Naoko Funiyama on Revolution Postgame Live
