The Celtics are bringing some additional competition into the mix for what will be a very intriguing training camp next month after signing swingman Kaiser Gates to an exhibit 10 deal on Thursday as first reported by Shams Charania of Stadium.

Gates, 22, went undrafted out of Xavier in 2018 and suited up last season for the Windy City Bulls, Chicago's G-League affiliate. The 6-foot-8 forward had a strong rookie campaign in the G-League after three years at Xavier, posting 12.7 points and 6.4 rebounds on 40.9 percent shooting from the field and 37.5 percent from 3-point range.

While Gates faces long odds to make the 15-man roster, the C's will have a better chance to secure his G-League rights next season by getting Gates on an Exhibit 10 deal, which can include a partial guarantee up to $50,000. If Gates is waived at the end of the preseason and heads to the G-League with the Red Claws, he gets that additional bonus money.

BSJ Analysis: The signing brings Boston's training camp roster to 19 players, one short of the preseason roster max (20). Let's take a closer look at the depth chart to see where Gates fits into the competition for the 15th roster spot.
