Red Sox

Final: Royals 6, Red Sox 2

The relief that came with Monday's win and the end of a long losing streak didn't last long for the Red Sox.

Andrew Cashner gave up three homers in 5.1 innings as the Sox lost to the lowly Kansas City Royals, 6-2.

After the Sox took a 1-0 lead in the third with a run-scoring single from Andrew Benintendi, Jorge Soler hit the first of two homers on the night, giving the Royals a 2-1 lead.

A solo shot by Ryan O'Hearn followed in the fifth and Soler added another two-run blast as part of a three-run sixth for Kansas City.

Cashner has given up two homers each in three of his five start since joining the Sox.

IN-GAME OBSERVATIONS:

9:25   Michael Chavis with perhaps his best defensive play of the year -- drifting back to shallow right center, leaping and hauling a shallow fly ball in, over the shoulder, and finishing with a tumble.

8:58   Trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Red Sox went down 1-2-3 on eight pitches. Make of that what you will.

8:46 Jail break. Soler hits his second of the night with a man aboard. That's three homers off Cashner and seven allowed in five outings.

8:26 Again with the long ball. Ryan O'Hearn reaches the seats in right. Third start in five that Cashner has allowed two homers.

8:11  A problem for Cashner, since joining the Red Sox, has been keeping the ball in the ballpark. He gave up two homers in his first start and two more in the second. He didn't allow any in either of his last two starts, but gives up a two-run blast to Jorge Soler, to give KC a 2-1 lead. Once again, failure to provide a shutdown inning for a Red Sox starter.

8:00 Andrew Benintnedi drops a bloop single into shallow RF, and with Devers off and running with two outs, scores easily with the game's first run.

7:57 Rafael Devers takes over the American League lead in doubles with 38.

7:50 Cashner efficient through three innings, needing just 37 pitches through the first three innings.

7:44 Royals survive a close call as Bradley flies out to right-center, as center fielder Bubba Starling holds on, despite a collision with Hunter Dozier.

7:11 Strong throw from Jackie Bradley Jr. to cut down Whit Merrifield at second, attempting to stretch a single. That's his eighth assist of the season.
