The Celtics officially brought about another draft pick on Friday night to their crowded roster, inking second-round selection Carsen Edwards to a four-year deal, according to a league source. Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe was first to report the signing.
Edwards, 20, will get the first three years of the deal fully guaranteed per a league source, with a total worth over $4.3 million for those three seasons. The final year of the contract will be a team option. The three guaranteed years is extremely unusual for a second-round pick as even first-round selections only have two full years guaranteed on their rookie-scale deals (team options for final two years).
A standout start to summer league for the No. 33 overall pick likely secured those favorable terms for Edwards and there is little doubt at this point that he will be an NBA contributor at that stage of his career. Edwards has been the leading scorer for Boston in summer league, averaging 17.4 ppg while shooting 50.9 percent from the field and 48.6 percent from 3-point range.
"Carsen has a chance to impact our team early because he obviously can make tough shots, he’s done a great job of picking the right ones, and he’s done a great job of picking up full and pressuring the ball," Brad Stevens said earlier this week. "At Purdue, when he had as much usage as he did, he couldn’t be asked to do that and we knew that coming in."
Edwards is expected to challenge for minutes off the bench at both guard spots while playing next to a facilitator in Marcus Smart or Gordon Hayward in his stints.
The Celtics now have 14 guaranteed contracts for the 2019-20 season with one 15-man roster spot open after waiving Guerschon Yabusele on Wednesday.
