Final: Yankees 12, Red Sox 8

It was more of the same for the second straight day for the Red Sox -- plenty of offense and not nearly enough relief.

The Red Sox pounded out 15 hits, but the bullpen was shelled for 10 runs. The Sox led after six innings thanks to a good start from Eduardo Rodriguez, who allowed two runs over  5.1 innings.

The Sox had struck quickly with three first-inning homers, giving them a 4-0 lead.

But in the seventh, the Yankees rallied for 11 runs in the seventh, beating up Marcus Walden, Matt Barnes and Josh Taylor.

Once again, the Sox rallied for some late runs, scoring four in the bottom of the eighth. And once again, it was just window dressing in the end.

The loss was the third straight for the Red Sox and sixth in seven tries against the Yankees and dropped them a season-high 11 games out in the A.L. East.

2:04  Double to right by Eduardo Nunez and the Sox score another garbage-time run.

1:58  Two-run bloop single to left by Vazquez and the Red Sox have their first runs since the four they scored in the first.

1:22 Two errors there by Chavis -- one physical, one mental. First, Chavis couldn't handle a ball with a lot of topspin. But even when he chased down the ball, he had time to get the out at first with Taylor covering, and yet held onto the ball.

1:17 Wretched inning by the Red Sox bullpen. Three pitchers have faced 11 hitters -- and gotten one out.

1:11  A miserable week continues for Matt Barnes, who faced four hitters and allows three to reach on a walk and two  singles

12:55 Two-strike, two-run single by Gary Sanchez and the Yankees lead for the first time today. That's the 17th blown save of the season for the Red Sox.

12:16  Before the game, Alex Cora said he hoped that Rodriguez would give him six innings. Rodriguez, at 115 pitches, falls two outs shy of that goal, but decent outing from him -- second inning aside.

WHAT'S UP: The Red Sox were beaten 17-13 in the series opener Saturday, their second loss in a row and fourth in their last six....It was also their fifth loss in six tries against the Yankees this season....The Sox now sit 10 games back of the Yankees, their largest deficit of the season....The 30 combined runs scored Saturday were the second-most total runs scored in a Red Sox-Yankee game.
