Red Sox

Final: Rangers 9, Red Sox 5

The Red Sox downward slide continued Tuesday night as they lost their third straight 9-4 to the Texas Rangers, and dropped to .500 for the season.

Darwinzon Hernandez, making his first major league start, proved himself not ready for prime time as he walked five in three innings and allowed four runs. Of the five batters the lefty walked, three came around to score. Hernandez did fan seven, but couldn't keep baserunners off base.

Bobby Poyner, who threw three innings in relief, wasn't any better, racked for five runs on six hits.

Rafael Devers snapped an 0-for-20 skid with a two-run triple in the third. The Sox got solo homers from Xander Bogaerts and Mookie Betts.

WHO: Red Sox vs. Texas Rangers
WHEN: 7:10 p.m.
WHERE: Fenway Park
STARTING PITCHERS: LHP Darwinzon Hernandez (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Ariel Jurado (3-2, 2.78)

9:09 Both Cora and Andrew Benintendi are run by first base umpire Vic Carapazza. Carapazza appeared to say something to Benintendi as the outfielder returned to the dugout after grounding out to short. When Benintendi turned around and began to jaw with Carapazza, Cora came out to protect his player and both were ejected.

8:40  Darwinzon Hernandez is a Mr. True Outcome all by himself -- five walks and seven strikeouts in three-plus innings. Of his 46 pitches, less than half (42) of them strikes.

8:18   Devers snaps an 0-for-20 in a big way -- tripling to the triangle, scoring two and tying the game.

8:06  Walks are, predictably, killing Hernandez. He walked the bases loaded, and on a two-out, full-count pitch with the runners going, allows a hard line single to center to Asdrubal Cabrera, scoring two.

7:44  Xander Bogaerts drives a two-seamer out to left-center for his 13th homer, tying him with Mitch Moreland for the team lead. And tying the game, 1-1.

7:41  That inning was Hernandez -- for now -- in a nutshell. Able to get swing-and-miss for two strikeouts. Control remains an issue, as he walks consecutive hitters. And when he falls behind, puts himself at danger of being hit hard -- so mix in a hard-hit double. But ultimately, he does well to limit the damage to a run.

7:36 After walking two, Hernandez gives up a rocket that bounced into the bullpen on one hop, scoring a run.

7:23 Rafael Devers continues to struggle -- now 0-for-20 -- as he pops out to short for the final out.

7:15 Impressive first inning for Darwinzon Hernandez, who strikes out the side -- all swinging -- mixing a 96-97 mph with a wipeout slider.

WHAT'S UP: The Red Sox have dropped four out of five and are just 12-14 in their last 26 games...Andrew Benintendi has hit safely in his last eight games, during which he's batting .306 (11-for-36) with an .814 OPS...He's scored a run in each of his last six games...Mookie Betts has scored 51 runs, tying him with Mike Trout for most in the Amercian League and second-most in MLB...Since the start of his first full season, Betts has scored 495 runs, just three fewer than the leader in that category in that time, Colorado's Charlie Blackmon, with 498...Betts is also second in the majors with 48 walks....Rafael Devers has committed just one error in his last 33 games....At the plate, Devers is now hitless in his last 19 at-bats....Over the last 21 games, Jackie Bradley leads the Sox in slugging with .618 and in OPS with a 1.010. He's knocked in 11 runs and scored 12 in that span...Brock Holt has reached base safely in all 10 games in which he's played after coming back from his injury rehab assignment.....Brandon Workman has retired the last 12 hitters he's faced and has held opponents scoreless in 29 of his 32 outings this season...Opponents are batting .086 against Workman this season, which, if can maintain, would qualify as the lowest mark in major league history for pitchers facing a minimum of 100 batters. Currently, the lowest mark belongs to Mike Adams who held hitters to a .111 batting average for San Diego in 2011...Over his last 20 games, Heath Hembree has a 0.52 ERA and has held hitters to a .052 batting average....Darwinzon Hernandez has held lefty hitters to a .149 batting average (11-for-74)….
