Red Sox

Final: Red Sox 11, Mariners 2

The Red Sox kept rolling with a one-side 11-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners, giving them their fifth win in a row and fourth straight series win.

Michael Chavis, who entered the game 0-for-19, broke out with three hits and five RBI. J.D. Martinez, who hadn't homered at Fenway this season, added two homers -- a solo shot in the first and a two-run blast in the eighth.

Hector Velazquez went five innings in his longest start of the year while Marcus Walden and Josh Smith each turned in two innings each in relief.

WHO: Red Sox vs. Seattle Mariners
WHEN: 1:05 p.m.
WHERE: Fenway Park
STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Hector Velazquez (5-1, 3.08) vs. LHP Marco Gonzales (5-1, 3.08)

4:15    Eight of the 11 runs scored by the Red Sox today came after two were out.

4:12   After coming into today without a homer at Fenway this year, Martinez hits his second of the afternoon, belting an inside changeup over everything in left. It's his 11th multi-homer game.

3:40   Another hit for Chavis, who slaps a ground ball between first and second and scores two more runs. Chavis is 3-for-4 with four RBI.

3:37   Seattle reliever Dan Altavilla can't find the strike zone. He's walked the first three hitters he's faced here  in the seventh. Xander Bogaerts has walked in all four plate appearances today.

3:08  It's not getting any better for Steve Pearce, who is 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.

2:53  Big two-run single to right by Chavis, who undoubtedly felt better about himself at the plate (0-for-19 coming in) after getting a gift bloop single in his first at-bat back in the first.

2:08  Christian Vazquez cuts down JP Crawford as part of a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play. Vazquez has thrown out 5-of-13 would-be base stealers this season.

1:59  All four runs scored today have come after two were out.

1:55  Red Sox catch two breaks on the same play. Not only did Jay Bruce drop a routine fly ball in right -- enabling Mookie Betts to reach -- but he also then threw to second when a throw home almost surely would have cut down Andrew Benintendi trying to score.

1:44 Quick second inning for Velazquez, who needs just nine pitches to set down the M's in order.

1:32 Michael Chavis snaps an 0-for-9 slump thanks to the wet grass. A routine pop-up to shallow right drops in as rookie Shed Long slips as he's camped under it. Bogaerts scores

1:27 J.D. Martinez tied the game up with a homer into the Monster Seats. Amazingly, that's his first homer at Fenway this season.

1:25 Red Sox hitters are making Seattle starter Marco Gonzales work early -- 17 pitches to the first two hitters.

1:16 For the second straight day, the Mariners take a quick lead in the top of the first inning. But after allowing the first two hitters to reach and having runners at second and third with no out, Hector Velazquez limits the damage by allowing just one run.
