HEADLINES
Revolution snap skid with win coming against the run of play: Despite having the ball for just over a quarter of the match (26.7 percent), New England did enough with it. The Revs scored three goals on three shots on-target, including a penalty, to cruise past visiting San Jose. It also marked the seventh straight time New England has gained a result against the Earthquakes. The win may have snapped a four-match winless skid, but it did not help get the Revs out of the Eastern Conference basement thanks to FC Cincinnati’s 2-1 win over Montreal earlier in the day.
Agudelo, Penilla stake Revs to 2-0 lead: New England came out in response to Brad Friedel’s sacking the way many expected. There was a great deal of patience, as well as aggressiveness in the attacking third, and the Revolution’s play was rewarded with two goals 11 minutes apart. Juan Agudelo buried Edgar Castillo’s 18th-minute cross off a throw-in for his first goal here at Gillette since the NYCFC game on Mar. 24, 2018, and second goal of the season. But then Teal Bunbury found himself taken down in the box by San Jose’s Harold Cummings not too long after that. Referee Guido Gonzales pointed right to the spot, and Cristian Penilla sent Quakes keeper Daniel Vega the other way to give the Revs a 2-0 advantage headed into the half.
