Sweeney: The Revs need to make some moves today, the final day of MLS' Primary Transfer Window taken at BSJ Headquarters (Revolution)

Later tonight — 12:59 a.m. on Wednesday morning, if we want to be exact — the Primary Transfer Window in Major League Soccer slams shut for the next two months. For now, all eyes are centered on the soccer side of Patriot Place, with fans wondering if the Revolution will make a move to strengthen their available selections.

In short, will the fandom rejoice with a new signing at the 11th hour, or will there only be the sounds of crickets coming from the front office?

With New England sitting 12th in the Eastern Conference with only eight points out of a possible 33 so far, something needs to be done to improve the state of affairs on Route 1, and not bringing any new players in at the deadline should be considered criminal.

As a refresher, here are the moves already made by the Revs regarding players brought in since the end of last season:

Carles Gil to the midfield
Juan Fernando Caicedo in the attack
Edgar Castillo at left back.

Places/positions that need strengthening:

I’m serious: Pick any position on the field for New England, and you can pretty much find a spot that needs an upgrade, seeing as several players — Diego Fagundez, Scott Caldwell, Andrew Farrell, Teal Bunbury — have been here since the first few years of the Jay Heaps Era. Goalkeeper, striker, defensive central midfield, defensive back line… any of those positions could see better options come in, or depth pieces so the Revs won’t have to make a player play through pain (see also: last Saturday against Philadelphia).

We have harped on the need for more depth at center back for some time now, and the Revolution have weaknesses in the defensive central midfield.

And while the Revs have had difficulty putting quality shots on frame during the first two months of the season — they’ve scored only 11 goals so far — the three goals in the last two games by JFC should give Revs supporters hope for more out of him. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen.

Offensive wingers, New England has in abundance.

Will anyone leave Foxborough before the deadline?

Probably not, but I wouldn’t necessarily rule it out — especially after Lee Nguyen left Gillette Stadium at the 11th hour last year, when no one was sure if he would stay or go.

In recent weeks, several players have, in a way, fallen out of favor in favor of others. Fagundez has not seen the field since the Montreal debacle two weeks ago, though he has made the last several matchday squads. He has only played 405 minutes so far this season. He may not leave during this window, but if things get worse on Route 1 -- and we think they will -- the Revolution front office should consider unloading the Leominster resident during the Secondary window this summer, if only to give the first Homegrown player in club history a chance to move elsewhere and, you know, win something.

Another longtime servant the Revs should consider moving at some point? Bunbury.

Players that should be considered surplus to requirements and should be sent packing? Wilfried Zahibo and Gabriel Somi. Both of whom are Brad Friedel players brought into the squad before the 2018 season, and while they showed tiny sparks of competence (Zahibo’s deep volley against NYCFC in the second home game of 2018, Somi’s short-lived ability to stay with the attacking winner against FC Dallas) in 2018, both have fallen out of favor (Somi since last July), take up precious international slots, and have high salaries (Somi $425,000, Zahibo $544,000). Getting rid of both will clear nearly a million bucks off the books, as well as clear up two international roster spots.

Getting rid of Somi, at least, should be a focus of the front office today. On Tuesday, fellow Blue Level scribe Julian Cardillo reported that the Revs rejected a $150,000 offer from FC Cincinnati for the Syrian left back during the offseason.
