FOXBOROUGH — It’s tough to look at Albert McClellan and not see a prototypical Bill Belichick-type of player.
The 32-year-old linebacker, a smart, cost-effective defender who has tremendous special-teams value, was signed by the Patriots on Nov. 6 after he was cut loose by the Ravens. Since then, he’s done nothing but make play after play on special teams for New England.
And Sunday against the Chargers, he was at it again. At the end of the second quarter, the Patriots punted the ball away for the first time all afternoon, but Desmond King lost the handle and the ball squirted away from him. McClellan was the man on the spot once again, coming away with the ball along the sidelines.
