BSJ Daily Briefing 11.20.18: Rams outlast Chiefs in a classic ... and/or horrific point of no return for NFL? taken at BSJ Headquarters (Regular Features)

Good morning!

A few random thoughts while I try to figure out if the Patriots play the same game as what we saw last night in the Los Angeles Coliseum...

  • So unless you live under a rock or go to bed at 9 every night, you know that the Rams outlasted the Chiefs 54-51 in a game that not even this Monday Night Football announcing crew could ruin (but they did try).

  • The game had everything: ridiculous offense, great individual performances, defensive touchdowns and Brandin Cooks dropping a touchdown and going for no gain twice in big spots because there was actually a defender in his way.

  • Pat Mahomes had six touchdowns ... and five turnovers.

  • Travis Kelce showed he can't block his way out of a paper bag to cause an interception.

  • Terrible clock management by Sean McVay, and it almost cost his team the game.

  • Two offensive head coaches who could have run the ball a lot more — Kareem Hunt and Todd Gurley combined for 26 rushes for 125 yards (4.8 average) — but didn't because of ego. The Rams' offensive line, especially, was dominating the Chiefs' thin defensive line.

  • There will be a ton of hot takes off this game — basically new school vs. old school. I'm not sure where I fall.

  • Was I entertained? Absolutely. Was my wife entertained? Absolutely. ... And I think the latter matters more to the suits on Park Avenue.

  • Was it good football? Not in the traditional sense. It was outrageously good offensive football. You were witnessing two great offensive minds with schemes to match with full arsenals of weapons having the time of their lives (where was Sergio Dipp when you need him?!). Somewhere, Josh McDaniels and Tom Brady were crying in each other's arms.

  • I'm not even sure you can call it bad defensive football because this was the night the NCAA came to the NFL ... and I'm not sure the NFL is ever coming back. What you saw last night was basically everything you see in college football west of Tuscaloosa. There were 140 plays, 25 possessions ... it's not even WAC football ... it's just college football.

  • For the record, I hate college football. It's basketball on grass. There's no strategy. The best talent is on offense. The only teams that stand a chance are the ones that find a way to come close to matching the athletic ability on the other side (Alabama, Clemson). The games come down to turnovers, not stops.

  • Is this the way the NFL wants to go? Maybe not the people in the game, but in the March to Roger's $25 Billion (in revenue), you better believe the beancounters love this. This is the type of game that makes fantasy geeks and degenerate gamblers think football is the greatest game on Earth. That's exactly what Park Avenue wants.

  • By the way, I know Joe Tessitore is a BC guy, but I ... just can't. He's the worst Next Room Announcer in the game. As in, I'm fixing a sandwich in the kitchen in the first quarter and I hear the announcer dramatically raise his voice ... I run into the next room, and it's a 5-yard run. Tessitore announces a first-quarter water break like they're about to cure cancer. Chill out. There are 16 games and 60 minutes of game action. Let the game speak for itself, especially this one. We came to watch the game, not hear you. "Let's write this final chapter...," Tessitore said with 50 seconds left. Seriously?
