HEADLINES

Revs eliminated without kicking a ball: Thanks to the wins tiebreaker, which DC United claimed earlier Saturday with a 1-0 win over FC Dallas, New England found its playoff hopes come to a close some 45 minutes before the opening kick here on Route 1. Even if the Revs (9-12-11) were to win all three remaining games to get to 44 points and DC lost out and stayed on 44, its 12 wins on the season would have been the determining factor. It is now three seasons on Route 1 without playoff soccer.

Penilla, Fagundez break deadlock early in second half: Cristian Penilla scored his 12th to take over the team lead in goals scored, his low drive skipping just beyond the reach of Orlando City keeper Adam Grinwis, giving the Revolution a 1-0 lead in the 51st. Four minutes later, Diego Fagundez doubled New England’s lead as he re-directed a Penilla feed from out on the flank to all but wrap up the three points and give the Revs their first home win since June 30.
