The Celtics added a potential 15-man roster candidate to the fold on Tuesday, adding swingman Marcus Georges-Hunt while waiving training camp invitee Justin Bibbs. It's a full roster for the Celtics at the moment (the team can have 20 players during the preseason) but the arrest of Jabari Bird is certainly leaving the door open for the possibility that a spot will open up before the start of the regular season, since Bird is expected to be waived once there is some resolution to his investigation.
The 24-year-old Georges-Hunt spent training camp with the Celtics back in 2016 and played the majority of the 2016-17 season with the Maine Red Claws before getting signed by the Orlando Magic. He spent the 2017-18 season as an end of the bench reserve for the Timberwolves, averaging just 5.3 minutes per game in 43 contests.
BSJ Analysis: The C's have terrific continuity all across the roster so it would be no surprise to see them bring in and reward someone who is familiar with their system once Bird is let go.
Georges-Hunt is nearly an identical fit from a position standpoint and should be able to hit the ground running with this group for the remainder of the preseason, although his minutes will be limited.
There is no guarantee that Georges-Hunt does make the final roster since the possibility remains that the investigation into Bird's case will extend for a few weeks into the regular season. The Celtics ideally will want salary relief from Bird's guaranteed deal whenever he is let go so they will be patient during that process.
Another possibility for the C's would be to leave a 15th roster spot open (if Bird is cut) to maintain some flexibility heading into the trade deadline and buyout season. With a couple of two-way players already signed, the C's won't need necessarily need the depth of 15 players if this group stays healthy.
