New England claims another road point: Given the Eastern Conference table, three points were vital on Saturday night/early Sunday morning back home — and for half an hour, it looked like The Boys In Blue would come away with a big goose egg. But thanks to a late goal by Brandon Bye, the Revolution return to the East Coast with a 1-1 draw at Banc of California Stadium, and their 12th road point of 2018. New England is now level on points (34) with DC United, who will take on the Red Bulls at 1 p.m. Sunday (ESPN). DC is in seventh via the wins tiebreaker, and the both are five points behind Montreal, who beat Philadelphia Union, 4-1, earlier Saturday night.
Bye goal the difference in this one: New England had fallen behind by a goal to nil seven minutes into the second half, but almost right away, the Revolution tried to pull it to level terms. A try by Brian Wright saw LAFC goalkeeper Tyler Miller barely toe-poke it away; sub Juan Agudelo put a shot from point-blank range directly on Miller. The Revs offense would pour it forward, with Luis Caicedo having a couple of attempts, only to see Miller stop them. But Miller couldn’t stop Bye from making the onion bag burp in the 82nd minute, as Teal Bunbury fed the rookie with a brilliant cross, and Bye drove it in with a cracking header to open his scoring account. Cristian Penilla would almost give the Revs a winner, but his stoppage-time shot caromed off the post.
