BSJ Weekend Briefing 07.13.18: Well, that was a lot of fun/Mookie Betts, MVP

Good morning!

A few thoughts while I try to imagine if the Blue Jays could have given the Sox any more chances in that fourth inning last night...

  • In case you've been in a coma, Mookie Betts had the at-bat of the season, which will probably be printed on his MVP trophy after the season.
  • As a connoisseur of good at-bats (I'm just a sucker for the one-on-one battle between a hitter and pitcher), that was pretty phenomenal.
  • The whole inning was amazing. It was like a nine-inning game wrapped into one frame. My old buddy Devon Travis (4-for-4 by the way) didn't stay on second base. Eduardo Nunez beat one out. Jackie Bradley battled back from 0-2, Justin Smoak almost ended the inning with a tremendous snag of a Betts foul ball.
  • At a time when some people are debating the entertainment of the Sox' product (I've always liked the division games, even against the putrid Orioles), last night reminded everyone of how special a night at the ballpark can be.
  • Even Matt Barnes' struggles/back-to-back strikeouts were entertaining. Same goes for Craig Kimbrel in the ninth.
  • Don't make the mistake of grouping Marcus Smart in with the other players who left the Celtics and did nothing. Smart is different. He does have intangibles that can't be quantified and the C's would be a lesser team without him.
  • Still, I'm not overpaying for him.
  • Same goes for Yabu.
  • Jaylen Brown is one impressive young man.
  • Please, bring in another bullpen arm.
  • David Krejci might have been underrated in the past, but I think those days are behind him.

Time to hit to the links...
