Good morning!

A few random thoughts while I wonder if Don Sweeney went on an early vacation...

  • While you were sleeping, the Senators appear to be on the verge of trading All-World defenseman Erik Karlsson to ... the Tampa Lightning, according to two reports.
  • Previously, the Toronto Maple Leafs landed All-World center John Tavares.
  • So the Bruins' divisional rivals, one of whom took them to seven games and the other whom ended their season with ease, have both landed franchise players.
  • A defensive pairing of Victor Hedman and Karlsson? How about these top two lines for the Leafs: Zach Hyman/Tavares/Mitch Marner; Patrick Marleau/Auston Matthews/William Nylander? Oh, and Nazem Kadri is the third-line center.
  • YIKES.
  • The Bruins, to this point, have signed depth pieces at goalie (Jaroslav Halak), defense (John Moore) and forward (Chris Wagner, Joakim Nordstrom).
  • YAWN.
  • So what exactly is the plan here? Are there any logical counter moves the Bruins can make? We'll be taking a look at that later today.
  • In the meantime, if the Karlsson deal goes through, there's no doubt the Bruins' biggest threats have gotten a lot better. The Bruins may have regressed.
  • This should be an interesting offseason.
