PREGAME NOTES
Wright (knee) to DL, spot starter TBD: The Red Sox today placed RHP Steven Wright on the 10-day disabled list with left knee inflammation, retroactive to June 23. To fill Wright’s spot on the 25-man roster, the club recalled RHP Justin Haley from Triple-A Pawtucket.
"It seems like he wasn't able to bounce back from the last (start) with his knee)," Alex Cora said. "I think it's a smart move, keep him off his feet, got to New York, go see the doctor, see where we're at.
"It sucks, especially with the way he was throwing the ball."
Wright had surgery May 8, 2017, on the knee, and it wasn't a simple scope — they transplanted cartilage from a cadaver into his knee.
"As you guys know, it wasn't a minor surgery," Cora said. "It's not that we expected setbacks, but we were prepared for it. We knew at some point it was going to be sore. ... We don't think it's going to be something that takes a while, but at the same time, we have to be sure we talk to the right people and go from there."
Wright gave up 10 runs on 10 hits in Friday's eventual 14-10 victory over the Mariners. He lasted just 3.1 innings.
"When I had the surgery, they kind of told me this was going to happen — you’re going to have really good weeks, you’re going to have really bad weeks and it’s going to come to a point where you’re not going to have to worry about it," Wright said.
Brian Johnson or Hector Velazquez would start Thursday against the Angels for Wright.
"It depends what happens today," Cora said. "Hopefully today, David will go deep into the game and we can go straight into our bullpen without using those two guys. Then we'll make a decision. It'll most likely be one of those two guys."
