Final: Red Sox 14, Mariners 10 - Sox win slugfest

Setting a season-high for hits and tying their season-high for runs, the Red Sox overcame the worst start of Steven Wright's career and stormed back to take a 14-10 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Wright was shelled for 10 runs in 3.1 innings -- including two three-run homers to Nelson Cruz -- and left with the Sox trailing 10-4.

But the Sox clawed back with a run in the fifth and three in the sixth before taking the lead for good with five runs in the seventh.

J.D. Martinez led the Red Sox' attack with four hits and five RBI. Mitch Moreland added three hits, three runs scored and an RBI while Rafael Devers contributed three hits and two RBI.

It marked the first time since 1945 that the Sox won a game in which a starting pitcher gave up 10 or more earned runs.

IN-GAME OBSERVATIONS

9:40 Rather amazing that the Red Sox are very much in this thing, despite allowing 10 runs in the first four innings. Brian Johnson did a nice job bridging from Wright to the late-inning guys (Barnes in now), buying them some time to catch up.

8:25 Knuckleballs are a notoriously fickle pitch, as Steven Wright again demonstrated tonight. After allowing one run in 20.2 innings covering his first three starts, Wright was shelled for four runs in the first, two more in the second and four more in the fourth. Nelson Cruz alone did enough damage - two tape measure homers, worth six of the 10 runs.

WHAT'S UP: The Red Sox and Mariners meet for the second time in less than a week. The clubs split a four-game series at Safeco Field as part of the Sox' recent 10-game road trip. Boston went 6-4 on that trip -- not bad, until you consider that they won the first three games and were leading in the fourth game before losing four games in the span of five. The Mariners, meanwhile, are reeling, having lost four in a row -- the final game against the Sox last Sunday, then getting swept in the Bronx earlier this week.  They've now fallen 3.5 games behind first-place Houston in the A.L. West.
