WHO: Revolution at Chicago Fire
WHERE: Toyota Park, Bridgeview, Ill.
WHEN: Saturday, June 9, 8:30 p.m. ET
TV/RADIO: NBC Sports Boston/WBZ-FM 98.5 HD2/AM 1260 (Portuguese)
WHAT’S UP: The Boys In Blue hope to win their second game in the league after the horrendous showing in the US Open Cup Tuesday by taking on old rival Chicago tonight. The Fire are through to the Fifth Round of the Cup after knocking off Columbus Crew SC, 2-1, on Wednesday. Five points separate these two Eastern Conference sides: New England sits fifth in the East (6-4-4, 22 points), while Chicago sits eighth (5-7-2, 17 points), and there is an eight-place differential in the Supporter’s Shield standings between the two.
Sean here. The starting XI’s are up. Your match notes are below, and the match is underway.
Revs are in the home blues while on the road and get us going. Periodic updates are below.
' Nemeth takes Schweinsteiger down with a cynical challenge, but no card issued.
' Caicedo with a dispossession after the Fire steal it away. Really even so far.
' Delamea concedes a corner.
' Nikolic on a Schweinsteiger volley.... goes just wide with the header.
' Dielna is whistled for a handle after he gets taken down, so free kick Fire, about 28 yards from goal.... and it's headed over the end line. And Delamea is bleeding! Oh boy. Right in the forehead. So is Nikolic. He's headed to the locker room. Both will play 10v10 as they get stitched up.
' A little build-up for the Revs, and Penilla has a scuffer... wide.
' Delamea back on. Revs playing 11v10 at the mo.
' Penilla with a drive goes wide after he fed Dielna with a slippy... Fire right back was asleep as Dielna makes his run.
' Alan Gordon on for Chicago in place of Nikolic. Back to even strength.
' Katai with a boomer after a nice run and cut-in by McCarthy.
' Farrell with a dispossession from behind as the Fire caught the Revs defense a little flat-footed, but no whistle... Fire fans displeased, and they may have a beef.
' BIG SHOT by Penilla. Nemeth with a pass inside the box to Penilla, who takes a back heel to shake the mark, and he fires a strike right to Sanchez. First big chance out of either side.
' Delamea is bleeding again. Evan Allen comes out again to wipe him clean, and it's time for a bandage.
' Dielna goes into the book, and he'll miss Wednesday's match against San Jose with a yellow card accumulation suspension. A reckless challenge on his part. Will now be interesting to see what Friedel does in the defense at midweek. Delamea back on.
' Katai with a drive, and Turner with the parry.
' Solignac with an ill-advised volley that goes high and wide.
' Great counterattack by the Revs. Farrell lost it, but Penilla gets it back... he gets into the box, tries a stutterstep, and loses the ball.
' ANIBABA! Anibaba with a block as the Fire get behind. Solignac's shot sees Anibaba go into a slide, and it catches his foot.
' Gordon goes down inside the box after nice build-up by the Fire. Not a penalty.
' Four minutes minimum stoppage time.
+4' Fagundez gets whacked by Adams in the box away from the ball. Corner for the Revs..
+5' HALF
Halftime thoughts: A rather entertaining first half in Bridgeview. Both teams pressing high. Friedel notes he wants a little more cohesiveness in the attacking third.
Second half underway. I have another cup of coffee for this late start. Periodic updates to follow.
' Rowe with a go on the free kick, and it's parried over the bar by Sanchez. Rowe's best shot of the year so far.
' Caicedo with a shot off the third straight corner. Delamea gets fouled, but no call. Fourth straight corner for New England.
' Revs with some serious special teams here, and Kappelhof with a takedown of Penilla, so it's a free kick for New England.
' Rowe with a volley, right to Sanchez.... Revs press, and they get the ball back from Nemeth, he passes to Bunbury, but it's slightly offline.
' Free kick for Chicago some 28 yards away out on the flank after Penilla "fouls" Schweinsteiger.
' Bunbury with a shot, just wide. Great play by Delamea to win the ball from behind.
' Corner for Chicago after Katai goes 1v1 with Farrell. It's a short corner, and Turner handles the volley.
' Nemeth with a shot after a lay-off by Bunbury, and it's into the side netting. He needs to be clinical there.
' Free kick for Chicago after a handle on Caicedo. 25 yards away.
' Katai takes it, goes right into the wall, and Delamea gets it off the noggin. Delamea's getting marked up tonight.
' GOAL CHICAGO, and it's Schweinsteiger with a drive on a pass from Katai. 17 yards away, and it has about enough power behind it to make it feel like it was shot from a cannon. 1-nil to the Fire. Great replay there, ball was in-play all the way at the touchline.
' Nemeth off for Juan Agudelo.
' Good tackle/dispossession by Rowe, Agudelo with the claim. Gets it to Bunbury... who shakes off his mark, and shots wide.
' Revs are getting beat off the ball here.
' Fagundez with a shot.. the wrong shot. Jeez louise. Wilfried Zahibo on for Rowe.
' Two bites of the apple for the Revs! Bunbury with a run that Sanchez blocks, it goes to Penilla, and he fires to Sanchez's gloves.
' Fagundez with a slippy to Penilla... he shoots, off the post!
' Campos on for Chicago, Solignac off.
' Almost a second for Chicago, and this time it was Katai. McCarty with a release, Katai gets beyond Agudelo, and he curls it just wide of the far post.
' GOAL REVOLUTION, and it's Bunbury! Anibaba brings the ball up slowly, volleys it into the box. It takes a high bounce and Sanchez tries to corral it with Fagundez in his face. Sanchez misplays it, Fagundez puts his boot up and gets it, he centers it to Bunbury, who pounds it home. Ninth goal of the season, ties his season high, and the Revs have--right now--a point out of this. 1-1. Let's see how this ends.
' McCarty off for Bronco.
' Caicedo with a go that was going in, but Sanchez gets a glove on it. Great move into the box by Agudelo. Powered his way in.
' Three minutes minimum of stoppages.
+1' Penilla takes a pass from Fagundez, and he shoots wide with a deflection.
+3' Caicedo with a drive blazes over.
