Revs are Louisville-bound for US Open Cup

The Revolution will travel to the United Soccer League’s Louisville City FC for their 105th Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Fourth Round match on Tuesday, June 5. It will be the first time these two sides meet in any competition.

The pairings -- which set up the 12 third-round winners with the 20 US-based Major League Soccer sides entering the tournament -- were announced Thursday morning at US Soccer headquarters in Chicago.

Louisville City beat fellow USL side Saint Louis FC, 1-nil, at the University of Louisville’s Lynn Stadium in Wednesday’s third-round matchup; a week ago, LCFC beat the Long Island Roughriders of the PDL, 5-0, in the second round.

With only one Division 2 side or lower matched into the Northeast Region, there was a chance the Revolution would open against a fellow MLS side. The other two sides in the Northeast were the New York Red Bulls and New York City FC, who will meet in a Hudson River Derby at the Red Bulls in a concurrent fixture.

The Revolution won the competition in 2007 and were runners-up in 2016 and 2001.

In addition, there are four All-MLS matchups in the Fourth Round. Along with Red Bulls and NYCFC, Columbus hosts Chicago, Portland and San Jose, and Real Salt Lake playing Sporting Kansas City.

The Revs match with LCFC will fall between league matches against the Red Bulls (June 2) and Chicago (June 9).

There are three non-league/lower-division sides remaining in this year’s competition: FC Golden State Force of the PDL beat the USL’s Las Vegas Lights, 2-1; NTX Rayados of North Texas are an amateur side representing the USASA, who beat the NPSL’s FC Wichita, 3-2; and Miami United FC of the NPSL, who defeated the Jacksonville Armada, an NASL side forced to play in the fourth division due to US Soccer’s de-certification of the second-division league last year, 2-nil.
