BSJ Weekend Briefing 03.30.18: Sox blow it, then fightin' Bruins pick everyone up taken at BSJ Headquarters (Regular Features)

Greg Cooper/USA Today Sports

Good morning!

  • Can't shake the similarities between the Red Sox opening day loss on Thursday and the one they experienced 15 years ago at the Trop. Back then, it was closer by committee that did the Sox in (Chad Fox anyone?). This time around, it was some unreliable middle relief. Same score and everything though as 15 years ago. At least Sox won't have much time to think about it as they are right back at it Friday night, with no customary day off after the opener.

  • Sean McAdam and Greg Bedard were both on the scene at the Trop and had great wall-to-wall coverage of the opener. Poor guys couldn't even get a nice outdoor venue for opening day. Can't think of a more depressing place for a team to open the year than Tampa.

  • It wasn't all bad news for Boston teams facing Tampa, as the Bruins continued their second-half surge by staking claim to first place in the division. Just remarkable how far they've come in the standings over the last few months. One more head-to-head matchup looms between the two squads next week, but B's could avoid a tough Toronto team in Round 1 if they finish strong here. They control their own destiny now. Terrific stuff from Joey Mac at the Garden on the entertaining affair, including a fun history lesson on Rask after he showed some fight Thursday night.

  • C's aren't back in action until Saturday night and they already canceled practice for Friday as they remain down several bodies. Al Horford and Marcus Morris are likely questionable for that pivotal matchup with the Raptors. DeMar DeRozan may be away from the team for the showdown though, as he remains with his ill father in California.

And away we go....
