IN-GAME OBSERVATIONS:
- Jalen Beeks is done for the day, having allowed three runs -- two unearned -- in three innings of work. He allowed just one hit, but didn't help himself with his own throwing error. He fielded a ball, then fired a throw well over the head of first baseman Mitch Moreland in the third, leading to two unearned runs for the Cardinals. He also had some difficulty with his control, issuing three walks. He threw 45 pitches, 27 for strikes.
- It's the first week of Grapefruit League play, but already, Mookie Betts is in mid-season form. By most measures, Betts was the best outfielder in baseball last year and he demonstrated why in the first inning. Betts came racing in to snare a shin-high sinking liner, then fired a strong throw to first to record a double-play.
