BSJ Daily Briefing 01.02.18: Da’Ron Payne getting it done, Pats coaches drawing interest and more

(Chuck Cook/USA TODAY Sports)

Welcome back from vacation! Whether it's back to school or back to work, chances are good you're getting back to your normal routine today after an extended holiday break. A couple of early thoughts while we thaw out.

--Georgia and Alabama in the National Championship? The Rose Bowl was bananas (in a good way), and I'm going to be fascinated to see what kind of quarterback Baker Mayfield is at the next level. But any scenario where we get more Da'Ron Payne, I'm OK with that. (Was it just me or did ex-Pats TE coach turned Bama OC Brian Daboll get a lot of camera time last night?)

--No shock that a bunch of teams are looking at the Patriots' assistants. Josh McDaniels and Matt Patricia have to make sure they have their LinkedIn accounts up to date. Those interviews have to take place in Foxborough sooner rather than later. I'm not sure about about McDaniels -- he's going to have a bunch of options -- but it feels like Patricia is a pretty good fit in Detroit, at least on the surface. And good for Brian Flores for drawing some attention. The Patriots' linebacker coach deserves some buzz.

And away we go...
