Answer: A longer version of his current deal. His deal with the Patriots contained a $1.1 million signing bonus, $1.8 million salary and offered him the opportunity to earn $250,000 in 46-man active roster bonuses. Rex could have earned $3.15 million this year if he was active for every game. Burkhead will be 28 when the 2018 season. I could see him signing a three-year deal that would pay him between $9 million and $12 million if he hits all of his incentives. I would expect that his incentives would be similar to James White (total scrimmage yards and playing-time).

Answer: A roster spot would be gained but no cap space, since as a former first-round pick his 2017 salary is fully guaranteed. What would be lost is cap space, as his replacement on his roster would take up cap space.

Answer: Any player who was not on a team's 53-man roster, Injured Reserve, PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) or NFI (Non-Football Injury) lists at the end of the team's season can be signed to a futures deal. A future deal is signed after the team's season ends. A future deal is usually for 1 to 2 years for typically the minimum salary. Typically, a team signs their practice squad to future deals once their season ends. So the twenty teams who do not make the playoffs will be signing their practice squad players to future deals wild-card week. After teams lose in the playoffs, they will then sign their practice squad players to future deals. The Pats signed their former 2016 practice squad players to futures contracts two days after winning the Super Bowl. Teams can sign street free agents to a futures deal anytime after the regular season. For example, the Patriots signed Rob Housler to a futures deal on January 19, 2017.
