FOXBOROUGH — The Cardinals signed running back D.J. Foster off the Patriots’ practice squad on Monday, per a league source.
Foster, 23, was placed on New England’s practice squad after the final cuts earlier this month. The 6-foot, 195-pounder spent the bulk of the last year-plus on the Patriots practice squad, but did get into three games last season and finished with seven carries for 24 yards and one catch for two yards. (For what it’s worth, Foster is one of only a few players on the roster who has punt return experience.)
The Cardinals were in need of help at the running back position after David Johnson went down with a serious wrist injury, and Foster — an Arizona State product — makes sense.
"I’m definitely excited for him -- he’s a good football player," said James White after hearing the news. "He had a great preseason. Well deserved. I hope he goes out there and balls out and gets a chance to play."
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media had the news first.
